A major power cut is affecting parts of the Isle of Wight this afternoon (09/04/2026), leaving more than 1,600 customers without electricity.
Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks (SSEN) says around 1,653 properties across 164 postcodes have been impacted. The outage is affecting areas including Niton, St Lawrence and parts of Ventnor.
The issue was first reported at 2.18pm, with engineers now on site working to restore power. SSEN currently estimates that electricity supplies should be back up and running by around 5pm.
Residents in the affected areas have reported disruption to homes and businesses, with some experiencing a complete loss of power during the afternoon.
SSEN confirmed the cause of the outage is linked to a fault on its overhead network.
In a statement on its website, the company said: "We're sorry for the power cut in the area, engineers have arrived on site.
"The power cut has been caused by a fault on our overhead network."
The company has apologised for the inconvenience and is urging customers to remain patient while repair work is carried out.
Power cuts of this scale can affect essential services, including heating, lighting and communications, particularly for vulnerable residents.
Customers are advised to keep an eye on official updates from SSEN for the latest information on restoration times.
Anyone experiencing ongoing issues after power is restored is being encouraged to contact the network operator directly.
