Work has started on a major redevelopment of Gosport’s waterfront set to transform the town’s bus station site into a new public space.
The £7.5 million project, approved by Gosport Borough Council, will create a green space called People’s Park, bringing new life to the area and offering residents and visitors a place to enjoy harbour views.
The 53-year-old bus station has been demolished to make way for the phased project, which is also expected to create jobs and support local businesses.
Speaking at the site, council leader Peter Chegwyn said: “It’s long overdue, and I’m delighted that at last we are getting it moving.
“This is hugely beneficial for the community. People won’t have to travel across to Portsmouth for eating, drinking, or harbour views — they can stay here in Gosport.”
Phase one of the project focuses on landscaping and infrastructure, including 1,400 sqm of new grassed public space, 20 new trees, evergreen shrubs, and bulb planting.
In addition, a resin-bound gravel path linking the promenade to the High Street walkway and a new performance space will be constructed.
Phase two will introduce a purpose-built performance structure for live events, a building for cafés and bars, new public toilets, a modern ferry ticket kiosk, and a bicycle repair concession.
On this aspect, Cllr Chegwyn said: “We have wonderful views across the Gunwharf and the Spinnaker Tower and it’s great that we are going to have restaurants, bars, bistros, wines bars on the waterfront with a brand-new People’s Park and live entertainment on the summer nights.
“It’s going to bring new life into Gosport; much needed new life, new jobs, new business, new investment, it’s a win-win all around.”
Construction of the park is expected to be complete in time for the summer, while the main building is scheduled for completion next spring.
Cllr Chegwyn said: “Residents will see the new park taking shape and will be ready for the public use for the summer season.
“The building will take slightly longer, that’s a 10-month contract, and would star as soon as the park is ready, hopefully next spring.
“These things don’t happen overnight, they take long time planning, but I’m absolutely delighted that we are now getting on and delivering for Gosport.”
