Heavy rain is forecast across the South today, with a yellow weather warning in force until 8am tomorrow. The bad weather is also interrupting sailings on Wightlink.

The warning has been issued by the Met Office and covers much of southern England, with periods of persistent rainfall expected to bring a risk of flooding and difficult travel conditions. Residents are being urged to remain alert as saturated ground and already high river levels increase the likelihood of further problems.

Flood alerts continue to be active across parts of Sussex, where several watercourses are under pressure. Areas of concern include the Aldingbourne and Barnham Rifes, as well as the River Lavant. Communities such as West Dean, Singleton, Charlton, East Dean and Chilgrove are being advised to stay vigilant, particularly in low-lying areas or locations that have experienced flooding in recent weeks.

In Hampshire, flood alerts remain in place for the River Ems Valley, along with areas around Hambledon, Finchdean and Rowlands Castle. The lower Meon is also being closely monitored as river levels respond to ongoing rainfall.

Authorities say people should be prepared for possible surface water flooding, fast-flowing rivers and water on roads. Motorists are being warned to take extra care, avoid driving through floodwater and allow additional time for journeys. Pedestrians are also advised to be cautious near rivers and streams, where water levels may rise quickly.

Residents are encouraged to check local flood information regularly and take sensible precautions, including moving valuables upstairs if flooding is a known risk and preparing a basic flood plan where necessary.
