New WemsFest Music Season has a Truly International Flavour!

Presenting international musicians in relatively rural locations has now been an accepted practice for WemsFest and in their 16th year they’ve raised the bar even higher.

Boasting musicians from The Gambia, Mali, Senegal, Chile, Spain, USA, Quebec, and the British Isles, the voluntary Emsworth-based arts organisation has assembled an eclectic mix in 8 different venues which start with one-time Punk musician (‘2-4-6-8 Motorway’), activist, campaigner and now BBC Radio presenter Tom Robinson on Saturday 3 October in The Pallant Suite, Havant.
Black History Month (October) is commemorated with concerts by Gambian master musician Musa Mboob and his West African band Xam Xam on Friday 9 October in a joint promotion with The Nest at Chichester Festival Theatre. The same musicians will give a day of workshops at Bourne Community School in Southbourne. Another Gambian musician – kora player Sura Susso is in concert with Malian bandleader Habib Koite at The old Malthouse, Chidham on Saturday 31 October.
Meanwhile the busy month of October includes the album launch, and concert by Anglo-Chilean band Quimantu in The Old Malthouse, Chidham on Saturday 24th, and English folk-rock pioneers Fairport Convention play Horndean Technology College on Tuesday 27th.
Seven concerts feature in November with one selling out within 3 days of going on sale.
Multi-award winning Celtic group Imar play St. James Church in Emsworth on Tuesday 3rd, Spanish fun-folksters El Pony Pisador are in concert in Westbourne Community Hall the following night (4th), and upcoming all-female Scottish group Birdvox play the same venue on the day after that (5th). Tickets for USA band, TopHouse, in Westbourne Community Hall sold-out within 3 days and minimal advertising – one of only 3 UK dates the band are playing.
Scottish fiddle-band Blazin’ Fiddles make a welcome return to St. James Church in Emsworth on Tuesday 17 November and the Celtic presence continues with Rioghnach, Connolly & Honeyfeet playing Westbourne Community Hall on Friday 20 November. The month ends with Quebec band, Genticorum, playing The Old Malthouse, Chidham, on Saturday 28 November.
Things quieten down in December but feature two high-profile shows.
Anglo-Caribbean band Maroon Town return to Westbourne Community Hall on Friday 11 December along with DJ Rob Moore for the third year running, and the year ends with award-winning Northumberland band The Unthanks playing The Box in Portsmouth Guildhall on Sunday 13 December.
