Sussex and Hampshire football preview: Busy weekend of action

UPDATED: 28/08/2025 @12:15 - It’s a packed weekend of football for clubs across Sussex and Hampshire, with big fixtures at both Premier League and non-league level.

Brighton vs Manchester City

The headline clash sees Brighton & Hove Albion welcome champions Manchester City to the Amex Stadium on Sunday, kicking off at 2pm. Albion find themselves in trouble early in the season, sitting 18th in the Premier League table, just below Aston Villa. Roberto De Zerbi’s side will be desperate for points, but City arrive as strong favourites. It promises to be a stern test as Brighton look to climb out of the relegation zone.

Championship Focus: Pompey and Saints

In the Championship, Portsmouth are at home today against Preston North End. Pompey have made a solid start to life back in the second tier, and Fratton Park is expected to be buzzing as they chase another win to cement their position in the table.

Just behind them sit Southampton, who travel to Vicarage Road to take on Watford. Saints trail Pompey by a single place in the standings, adding local rivalry as both clubs battle for early momentum in the campaign.

Crawley on the Road

In League Two, Crawley Town are away at Chesterfield this afternoon, with kick-off at 3pm. The Red Devils will be keen to prove they can compete against one of the division’s promotion contenders, and their travelling fans will be hoping for a strong performance.

Non-League Spotlight

The weekend also brings plenty of drama in non-league football. Worthing host Maidstone United at the Sussex Transport Community Stadium in National League South, with the Rebels aiming to continue their positive start in front of home support.

Over in the Isthmian League, Bognor Regis Town face Leatherhead at Chichester City’s Oaklands Park. It will be an emotional occasion, as joint manager Michael Birmingham steps away from his role after the match, leaving Jamie Howell to continue in charge. Birmingham has been a key figure at the club, and supporters will want to give him a fitting send-off.

Meanwhile in the Southern Combination League, Selsey are back in action with a trip to Saltdean United. The Blues will be aiming to build consistency after a mixed run of results.

A Full Weekend Ahead

From Brighton’s Premier League battle with City to grassroots action in the county leagues, supporters across Sussex and Hampshire have no shortage of football to enjoy this weekend.
