Police in Chichester are urging motorists across the district to take extra precautions to protect their vehicles from thieves as the darker autumn evenings arrive.
Officers have issued a crime prevention reminder encouraging drivers to be more vigilant about where they park and what they leave inside their vehicles.
With daylight hours getting shorter and more people returning to their cars after dark, Sussex Police are reminding residents that simple security measures can help reduce the risk of vehicle crime.
Chichester Police say opportunistic thieves often look for easy targets, including vehicles left unlocked or with valuable items visible inside.
In a message shared with residents, officers warned: "Darker nights are arriving!
"As the evenings get darker, take extra care when parking your vehicle."
Police are encouraging motorists to choose well-lit parking spaces wherever possible, particularly when leaving vehicles unattended during the evening or overnight.
Drivers are also being reminded to ensure all doors and windows are properly secured before walking away from their cars.
Using secure car parks where available is another recommendation, along with removing valuables rather than leaving them inside the vehicle.
Items such as bags, wallets, mobile phones and other personal possessions can attract the attention of opportunistic criminals if left on display.
Even when a vehicle is locked, visible belongings can provide an incentive for thieves to attempt a break-in.
Officers say that taking a few extra moments to check a vehicle before leaving it unattended could help motorists avoid becoming victims of crime.
In their public safety message, Chichester Police added: "Vehicle thieves look for easy opportunities. Make your vehicle a less attractive target."
The reminder comes as communities across West Sussex prepare for the clocks to go back later this month, bringing darker evenings and longer periods of darkness.
Residents are encouraged to remain vigilant and report suspicious activity to Sussex Police.
Non-emergency incidents can be reported online through the Sussex Police website or by calling 101.
Anyone witnessing a crime in progress should call 999.
