A major funding package worth almost £1 million has been approved to replace a key sports facility in Chichester.
Chichester District councillors backed the funding for the White Pavilion in Priory Park.
The current building needs to be replaced so it can continue to meet the needs of sports clubs and community groups across the district.
The pavilion is used by more than eight cricket clubs, including Chichester Priory Cricket Club. Junior Park Run also holds its weekly event there, while the building supports other activities and events in Priory Park.
If planning permission is granted, the existing pavilion would be demolished and rebuilt in the same location.
The new facility would include improved team changing rooms, a new umpire changing area, accessible toilet and changing facilities, and a social space with a small kitchen. The council says the plans would bring the building in line with England and Wales Cricket Board guidance.
Councillor John Cross, Cabinet Member for Culture, Sport and Place at Chichester District Council, said: “This facility is at the heart of sports in Priory Park and needs urgent investment so that the cricket teams and other sports groups have a base that is safe and meets their needs,” says Councillor John Cross, Cabinet Member for Culture, Sport and Place at Chichester District Council. “I’m delighted that funding has been approved for this project which is also fully supported by both the cricket club and Priory Park Association. “A new pavilion will have a hugely positive impact on the park and everyone who uses it. The new building will look better and it will also be an opportunity to make it as energy efficient and sustainable as possible.
“For the cricket teams it will enable them to meet growing demand, especially for women’s and girls’ cricket and give more people the opportunity to access the sport. We also anticipate that the new facility will boost bookings for pitch and building hire.
“The council will now work on a legal tendering exercise to ensure that the project meets best value for our residents. Once this process has been completed and a contractor selected, they will work with both the council and clubs to submit a planning application.”
A planning application is expected by the end of summer 2026. If approved, construction could begin by the end of 2027.
