Portsmouth’s iconic Sails of the South landmark has been restored following a major refurbishment programme.

The distinctive tri-sail structure, which sits at the entrance to the city on the M275, has been brought back to full condition in time for Portsmouth’s centenary celebrations.

The landmark was originally installed to improve the arrival experience for people coming into the city. Its fabric sail panels had reached the end of their 25-year design life, leading to the recent removal of some sections on safety grounds. The wider structure, however, was designed to last 50 years.

The refurbishment has seen all sail panels replaced, alongside structural checks, upgrades and new lighting. The work is designed to ensure the landmark continues to meet modern safety standards and remains resilient for years to come.

Specialist contractors were involved throughout the programme. Tensile Installations Ltd installed the new sail panels and carried out structural refurbishment, while Cosmic Electronics Ltd delivered the new lighting system. Colas and Cable Connections Ltd supported electrical work and structural monitoring, with Argo Engineering Solutions Ltd providing engineering support.

Because the landmark is located in the central reservation of the M275, access to the site presented a major challenge. To reduce disruption, Chevron Traffic Management used an Enhanced Mobile Carriageway Closure system, allowing traffic to be slowed for short periods instead of full lane closures.

KL Systems Ltd also developed a mobile app using live traffic and bus position data, helping crews decide when to carry out work with minimal impact on traffic and public transport.

HGP Architects Ltd, the original designers of the Sails of the South, also worked with the council during the refurbishment.

Cllr Steve Pitt, Leader of Portsmouth City Council, said: “The Sails of the South are an iconic symbol of Portsmouth, welcoming people into our city. I’m delighted that this refurbishment is now complete, restoring the structure so it looks its best for the city’s Portsmouth100 celebrations, and remains safe and resilient for many years to come.”
