Concerns have been raised in Henfield following reports of individuals using a catapult at the Tanyard.
Henfield Parish Council says it is aware of the reports and has confirmed the incidents have been passed to Sussex Police.
The council is reminding people that animals and wildlife are protected under law, including the Wildlife and Countryside Act and the Animal Welfare Act 2006.
Under the Animal Welfare Act, it is an offence to cause unnecessary suffering to an animal, while wildlife legislation also provides protection for birds and other wild animals.
The Tanyard is a well-used open space in Henfield and is valued by local residents as an area for walking, nature and community use.
The reports have prompted concern because catapults can cause serious injury to wildlife, pets and other animals if used irresponsibly. They can also pose a risk to people and property in public spaces.
Henfield Parish Council has urged people to be aware of the legal protections in place and the potential consequences of harming wildlife.
Anyone who witnesses suspicious behaviour, or sees someone using a catapult in a way that could endanger animals or members of the public, is advised to report it to Sussex Police.
The council says the matter is now with police following the reports.
Residents are also being encouraged to help protect local wildlife by remaining vigilant and reporting any further concerns.
The reminder comes as communities across Sussex continue to place increasing importance on protecting green spaces and the animals that live in them.
