East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service is urging residents, visitors, businesses and landowners to help reduce the risk of wildfires this summer as part of its annual #WildfireReady campaign.

The service says wildfire season typically begins in spring, when dry vegetation and windy conditions increase the risk of fires in rural areas and open spaces.

With warmer weather approaching and increased visitor numbers expected during the May bank holiday and half-term period, fire crews are encouraging people to take extra care outdoors.

Station Manager Trevor Funnell, ESFRS Wildfire Lead, said: “We want people to enjoy our beautiful countryside and open spaces safely, but it’s important everyone understands the risks during warm, dry weather.

“Simple actions can make a huge difference in preventing fires from starting and spreading. By working together and being prepared, we can help protect people, property, wildlife and the environment.”

East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service has been working with local communities, landowners and organisations to improve wildfire prevention and preparedness.

This has included working with the National Farmers Union to share safety advice, collaborating with Ashdown Forest on wildfire management planning, and taking part in specialist training exercises.

The service is also sharing Natural England Fire Severity Index alerts during periods of high and very high risk.

Advice for residents includes maintaining gardens by removing dry grass and leaves, avoiding bonfires where possible and safely storing flammable materials.

Visitors are also being reminded not to drop cigarettes on dry ground, to follow local signage and restrictions, and to ensure any campfires or barbecues are fully extinguished.

Businesses and landowners are being encouraged to regularly review fire risk assessments and maintain firebreaks.

The fire service says by working together communities can help reduce the risk of wildfires and protect the countryside throughout the summer months.
