Roman history is set to come to life in Chichester this May half term, as Chichester Roman Week returns for five days of talks, tours, workshops and hands-on activities.
Now in its tenth year, the event will run from Tuesday 26 to Saturday 30 May 2026, offering families, history enthusiasts and visitors the chance to explore the city’s Roman past.
The programme has been created by The Novium Museum in partnership with organisations across Chichester District, with events designed for a wide range of ages and interests.
One of the main highlights will be Roman Re-enactment Day in Priory Park on Thursday 28 May, from 10.30am to 4pm. Leading re-enactment group Legio Secunda Augusta will bring Roman history to life through interactive demonstrations showing how Roman soldiers lived, fought and trained.
There will also be have-a-go archery, Latin taster sessions in The Guildhall, plus food and drink.
Younger visitors can also enjoy Roman Storytelling with Red Sauce Theatre, a Roman Family Walk and Sketch through Chichester city centre, and a workshop to decorate mini terracotta pots inspired by traditional Roman designs.
The programme includes talks at The Novium Museum on subjects including the Roman Gladius and the decline and fall of Roman Britain. Guided tours will also take place at The Novium Museum and Fishbourne Roman Palace’s Collections Discovery Centre.
Partner venues, including Chichester Festival Theatre, Pallant House Gallery and Chichester Harbour Conservancy, will also host Roman-themed events.
Cllr John Cross, Cabinet Member for Culture, Sport and Place at Chichester District Council, says: “Roman Week is a recognised and much-loved fixture in the district’s calendar, and we’re delighted to see it return for another year. Chichester’s Roman history is part of what makes the city so distinctive, and this programme gives people of all ages the chance to explore that history in interesting and accessible ways. From free family activities in Priory Park to talks, tours and workshops across the district, there is something for everyone to enjoy.”
