The first group of asylum seekers has been moved into a former military barracks in Crowborough.
It’s understood that 27 people are now staying at the former training camp while their asylum claims are processed.
Wealden District Council leader James Partridge says the Home Office confirmed late last night that asylum seekers would be placed at the site within days.
The move is part of government plans to reduce the use of hotels for asylum accommodation.
The Home Secretary says the policy is intended to ease community pressures and discourage dangerous crossings of the English Channel by small boat.
Wealden District Council says it has now contacted its legal team to explore its next steps and has raised concerns about how the plans are being progressed.
