Three women have died after being recovered from the sea off Brighton this morning.
Emergency services were called to concerns for the welfare of three women in the water near Madeira Drive at around 5.45am today, Wednesday 13 May.
Despite the response from emergency services, Sussex Police have confirmed that the bodies of three women were sadly recovered from the sea.
The force says enquiries are now under way to confirm their identities and establish the full circumstances of what happened.
The incident has led to a large emergency services presence in the area, with members of the public being urged to stay away from the scene while work continues.
Madeira Drive is one of Brighton’s most recognisable seafront areas, running along the lower promenade close to the pier and beach. The incident happened during the early hours of the morning, when emergency services were alerted to the concerns.
Chief Superintendent Adam Hays said: “This is a tragic incident and fast-moving enquiries are ongoing to confirm the identities of these three women and understand exactly what has happened.
“I know this is concerning for the community, but I would ask the public to stay away from the scene at this time while emergency services continue their work.
“We will provide further updates as soon as they are available.”
Police have not yet released any further details about the ages of the women, where they were from, or the circumstances leading up to the incident.
Emergency services remain at the scene and further updates are expected once formal identification has taken place and next of kin have been informed.
