Twelve young people have graduated from the latest GRIT course run by West Sussex Fire & Rescue Service.
A pass-out parade was held at Bognor Fire Station on Friday, 8 May, in front of proud family and friends, as well as the High Sheriff of West Sussex, Mr Gary Shipton.
The students, from Ormiston Six Villages Academy and Bourne Community College, spent two weeks working with fire service instructors as part of the programme.
During the course, they took part in simulated firefighting drills and activities designed to support their social and emotional development.
The young people were encouraged to step outside their comfort zones, work as a team and support each other throughout the programme.
Activities included running hoses on the drill yard, tackling teambuilding tasks, learning first aid and developing communication skills.
West Sussex Fire & Rescue Service says the GRIT course is aimed at helping young people build confidence, resilience and practical life skills, while giving them an insight into the work of the fire service.
The programme ended with the pass-out parade, where the students were able to demonstrate what they had learned during their time on the course.
West Sussex Fire & Rescue Service’s Assistant Chief Fire Officer, Andy Piller, attended the event and presented the young people with their certificates.
Speaking at the parade, he said: “Having met all these young people, their politeness and dedication shone through when listening to them speak about their experiences on this GRIT course.
“The way in which they worked together and executed their drills perfectly shows me that we have 12 future firefighters in the running, and I hope to be meeting them again on a fire station when they turn 18 years old!”
The fire service praised the young people for their commitment and teamwork throughout the two-week course.
