A child has been rescued after falling around three metres into the Chichester Canal on Saturday, thanks to the quick actions of members of the public and emergency services.
The incident happened near the canal, where the child fell into the water and was unable to climb out. People nearby immediately raised the alarm and acted to help, throwing a lifeguard ring into the canal. The child was able to hold on to the ring and stay afloat while emergency services were contacted.
Selsey and Hayling Island Coastguard teams were called to the scene and arrived shortly afterwards. Using specialist equipment, including a ladder, coastguard officers were able to reach the child and help them climb out of the canal safely.
Emergency services have praised the actions of the members of the public who stepped in to help, saying their quick thinking played an important role in keeping the child safe until professional help arrived.
We understand the child is doing well after being checked over by paramedics.
If you spot an emergency at sea or in our waterways, dial 999 and ask for the coastguard.
