Did you spot the Northern Lights over southern England last night? If you did, you were one of the lucky ones.
For many people, thick cloud spoiled the view, but in Felpham the sky briefly put on a spectacular show – and V2 Radio's Neale Bateman was in just the right place at the right time to capture it.
The display was unusually powerful, with vivid pinks, purples and greens visible far further south than normal. Aurora sightings like this are rare in southern England, and last night’s activity was driven by a strong burst of solar energy hitting Earth’s magnetic field. The result was a glow that, when clouds allowed, could be seen with the naked eye – and looked even more impressive through a camera lens.
Reports of the lights came in from across parts of Sussex, Hampshire and along the south coast, although visibility varied widely depending on cloud cover. Some people saw only a faint pink tinge in the sky, while others were treated to clearly defined streaks and curtains of light.

So, could we see them again tonight? The short answer is: possibly, but it’s far from guaranteed. Solar activity remains elevated, meaning there is still a chance of further auroral displays. However, forecasts suggest any sightings tonight are more likely further north, and cloud cover will once again be a major factor.
If you’re feeling hopeful, experts suggest heading somewhere dark, away from streetlights, and looking north after around 10pm. Good luck!
