East Sussex parents urged: Vaccinate against measles

Health leaders in East Sussex are calling on parents and carers to make sure their children are fully vaccinated against measles, as the number of confirmed cases continues to climb across England.

According to the latest data from the UK Health Security Agency, over 520 cases of measles have been reported nationwide since the start of the year.

Figures from 2023 to 2024 show that more than one in ten children turning five in East Sussex have not received both doses of the MMR (Measles, Mumps, and Rubella) vaccine, leaving them more vulnerable to infection.

"Highly infectious and potentially dangerous"

Darrell Gale, Director of Public Health in East Sussex, warned:

“Measles is an extremely infectious virus that spreads very easily through touch, coughs and sneezes. While some people experience no symptoms, the virus can be extremely dangerous to others.”

He highlighted the tragic death of a young child in Liverpool as a stark reminder of how serious measles can be.

“The MMR vaccine is a safe and extremely effective way to prevent measles, mumps and rubella. Two vaccines are needed to be fully protected and, while ideally children should receive the MMR vaccine at 13 months and again at three years and four months, it is never too late to catch up.”

The symptoms and risks

Measles typically begins with cold-like symptoms, a high temperature, sore red eyes, white spots inside the mouth, and a red blotchy rash. While many recover without issue, complications can include blindness, meningitis, pneumonia, and even death.

Vaccination rates must improve

Mr Gale added that vaccines not only protect individuals but also help shield vulnerable members of the community through herd immunity.

“To prevent the virus from spreading, vaccination rates need to be around 95 per cent. The rate across England is currently at around 84 per cent.”

Parents who are unsure of their child’s vaccination status are encouraged to check with their GP and book catch-up appointments if needed.
