Portsmouth City Council is set to begin refurbishment work on the Sails of the South on the M275 from 10 February, as part of efforts to keep the landmark safe and looking its best ahead of Portsmouth’s centenary year as a city.
The structure, also known as the Tri-Sail, stands 43 metres high and was originally unveiled in March 2001 as part of a wider scheme to enhance the main gateway into the city. Over time, the fabric sail panels that form the distinctive feature of the landmark have reached the end of their working life, with some panels already removed in recent months for safety reasons. As part of the refurbishment, all 27 sail panels will be replaced, including those missing. The new panels will be made from a strong, durable fabric chosen for its ability to perform well in coastal conditions while requiring minimal maintenance. The work is expected to significantly extend the lifespan of the structure. Specialist contractors will also inspect the supporting booms and masts, replacing or upgrading fixings where necessary. The council says this will ensure the entire structure meets modern safety standards and should allow it to remain in place for at least another 25 years before further major work is required. Access to the central reservation where the landmark is located is limited, as there are no pedestrian or vehicle routes. To carry out the work safely while minimising disruption, contractors will use an Enhanced Mobile Carriageway Closure system. This allows traffic to be slowed briefly for access, rather than stopping vehicles or installing long-term lane closures. Work is due to start on Tuesday 10 February, following a night-time closure on Monday 9 February, and is expected to take around ten weeks, depending on weather conditions. Cllr Candlish, Cabinet Member for Transport said: “The Sails of the South is an iconic feature that welcomes people into Portsmouth, so I’m delighted we’ve been able to provide the funding to get it looking tip-top for the Portsmouth 100 centenary celebrations. This essential work will make sure it stays safe, strong and attractive for years to come, while keeping disruption on the M275 to a minimum.” Get the latest BREAKING NEWS for the SOUTH on your phone by downloading the V2 RADIO APP today!
