Motorists across the South are being urged to take extra care on the roads this morning after another spell of heavy rain overnight led to widespread flooding and difficult driving conditions.
On the Isle of Wight, significant flooding has been reported in several locations, including around Gatcombe, as well as in Brading and Sandown. Surface water has been affecting a number of roads, with some routes partially impassable. Drivers are being advised to avoid flooded areas where possible and to allow extra time for journeys.
In West Sussex, flooding continues to cause problems around Shripney, an area that has been repeatedly affected during recent spells of wet weather. High groundwater levels and already saturated land mean water has been slow to drain away, increasing the risk of further disruption if rain continues.
East Sussex has also seen renewed issues, with flooding reported on roads around Spithurst. Local authorities say standing water and reduced visibility are making conditions hazardous, particularly on rural roads and low-lying routes.
Emergency services and highways teams are continuing to monitor conditions closely. Drivers are being reminded not to attempt to drive through floodwater, as even shallow water can cause vehicles to lose control or become stranded. Pedestrians are also being urged to take care near swollen rivers, ditches and drains.
Weather forecasters say the recent rainfall, combined with ground that is already waterlogged, has increased the likelihood of localised flooding. Residents in affected areas are being encouraged to keep up to date with travel updates and weather warnings, and to check road conditions before setting out.
Conditions are expected to remain challenging in places, with further showers possible, meaning disruption could continue through the day.
