Passengers at several major European airports, including London’s Heathrow, are facing disruption today after a technical issue hit systems used by multiple airlines.
The outage could lead to delays and possible cancellations as airlines and airports work to manage the situation. Heathrow, one of the world’s busiest international hubs, has warned travellers to expect longer waits when checking in.
In a statement on X (formerly Twitter), Heathrow said: “Collins Aerospace, which provides check-in and boarding systems for several airlines across multiple airports globally, is experiencing a technical issue that may cause delays for departing passengers.
“While the provider works to resolve the problem quickly, we advise passengers to check their flight status with their airline before travelling. Please arrive no earlier than three hours before a long-haul flight or two hours before a domestic flight.
“Additional colleagues are available in check-in areas to assist and help minimise disruption. We apologise for any inconvenience.”
So far, London Gatwick has escaped the disruption. A spokesperson for the airport told V2 Radio News: “London Gatwick’s check-in systems are operating as normal today and have not been affected by the technical issues impacting some other airports.”
Across Europe, travellers have shared reports of queues and confusion at departure halls as airlines attempt to process passengers manually. While the full scale of the impact is not yet clear, airports are urging passengers to allow extra time and to keep in close contact with their airline.
For now, passengers due to fly from Heathrow and other affected airports are advised to monitor live updates, follow airline guidance, and prepare for potential disruption to their journeys.
