Arun District Council has refreshed its fuel poverty and energy efficiency strategy and is asking residents for their views.
The five-year plan aims to support households struggling with rising energy costs and to help improve home efficiency.
The council says the national energy crisis has hit the lowest-income families hardest. Feedback from the consultation will be presented to councillors in the new year before the plan is finalised.
The plan for the next five years includes:
- Working to reduce the number of people living in fuel poverty, such as spending 10% or more of their income on maintaining a comfortable temperature at home
- Targeting local areas of housing with Hard to Treat (HTT) homes with extra support, creative solutions
- Improving the energy efficiency of the council’s own housing stock
- Contributing to national net zero targets, for example, supporting residents and landlords to upgrade to modern, renewable energy systems
- Finding and helping the owners of cold homes to improve energy efficiency by installing loft, cavity wall and solid wall insulation
- Enforcing minimum energy efficiency standards for the private rented sector
Councillor Amanda Worne, Chair of Arun District Council’s Environment Committee, said:
“Tackling fuel poverty and improving energy efficiency is a priority for Arun District Council. This strategy is about supporting our most vulnerable residents, including people with disabilities who often need their homes heated 24/7 and at higher temperatures to stay warm in the colder weather, reducing energy costs, and helping our community move towards a sustainable, net zero future.
