Heavy rain warning issued across the South – What you need to know

The South is under a yellow weather warning for heavy rain, in force until midday.

Forecasters have issued a yellow weather warning for heavy rain across parts of the South, with between 10 and 70 millimetres expected to fall. The Met Office has also warned of the possibility of thunder in places, raising the risk of disruption throughout the day.

Travel is likely to be one of the biggest areas affected. Bus and train journeys could take longer than usual, while drivers are being urged to take extra care on the roads, with spray, surface water and localised flooding making conditions more hazardous. In addition, some homes and businesses could experience flooding, particularly in low-lying areas.

The Met Office is advising people to plan ahead, checking road conditions before travelling and looking at bus and train timetables to avoid unexpected delays.

1. Could your property be at risk of flooding?
Check flood alerts in your area and move valuable items upstairs if you’re in a vulnerable location.

Keep away from swollen rivers and fast-flowing water, and never attempt to walk through flood water.

3. Is it safe to drive?
Avoid travelling if conditions worsen. If you must drive, slow down and leave more space between you and the vehicle in front.

4. What about flood water?
Never drive through it. Just 30cm of moving water can move a car, and even shallow standing water can hide hazards.

5. Think about your neighbours
Check in on vulnerable neighbours, especially the elderly or those with mobility issues, who may need extra help if flooding occurs.

With the warning in place until later today, officials say the key is preparation. Taking simple steps now can reduce the risk of disruption — and keep you safe.
