Local man builds statue to honour key workers

A statue is to be made in honour of key workers for their hard work throughout the pandemic in Chichester.

John Gillespie, who is 41 years old and lives in Chichester, is an engineer and is more used to producing component parts for luxury yachts.

After being 'inspired by the struggle of so many', he decided to show his feelings by using his workshop to build the sculpture, which is touchingly titled 'Unity'.

The sculpture depicts a nurse sitting on a bench with a two-meter space for social distancing is set to be put on display on Wednesday 24 March on East Street, opposite Barclays Bank.

The statue has been made with keys, including the job titles of key workers engraved into them.

John said on Facebook "I am making a sculpture of a handmade stainless steel nurse her tunic is made up of individually made keys depicting different key professionals who have kept our country running through the pandemic of 2020. It is our families thank you, our ode to them."
