Sussex Police have arrested 56 people for drink and drug driving during the second week of a December enforcement campaign, as officers step up efforts to improve road safety during the festive period.

The latest figures bring the total number of arrests since the start of the month to 119. Of those, 43 people have already been charged with offences relating to driving while over the legal limit for alcohol or drugs.

Police say each arrest represents a potentially serious incident avoided, warning that drink and drug driving continues to pose a major risk to road users. Officers say those who choose to drive while impaired are not only putting their own lives in danger, but also the lives of passengers, pedestrians and other motorists.

The crackdown forms part of a wider seasonal campaign aimed at reducing collisions and casualties during December, when social events, parties and increased travel can lead to higher levels of drink and drug driving.

Throughout the month, police will continue to carry out extra patrols and targeted roadside checkpoints across the area. These checks are designed to identify drivers who are over the legal limit, as well as to act as a deterrent to others who may be considering taking the risk.

Officers have also thanked members of the public who report suspected drink or drug drivers, saying those calls play a vital role in helping police take action. They say they cannot be everywhere at once, but information from the public can help officers intervene quickly and prevent serious harm.

Police are urging anyone planning a night out to make alternative travel arrangements, such as using public transport, booking a taxi, or arranging a designated driver. They are also reminding people that the effects of alcohol and drugs can last longer than expected, meaning drivers may still be over the limit the following morning.

The enforcement campaign will continue throughout December, with police saying that anyone caught drink or drug driving can expect to face arrest, prosecution and the possibility of losing their licence.
