Worthing could see dozens of new affordable homes built after councillors approved the sale of a major housing site in Titnore Way.
Adur and Worthing’s Joint Strategic Committee has agreed to sell the former Caravan and Motorhome Club site to a developer, paving the way for up to 130 new homes. The development would include 35 affordable rental properties and 11 for shared ownership, subject to planning permission.
Councillor Sophie Cox, Leader of Worthing Borough Council, said she was pleased to see progress on a long-standing housing site.
“The former Caravan Club site has been designated for housing for many years, so I'm delighted that we’re on our way to making that a reality,” she said.
“We desperately need more homes for our residents — particularly affordable homes — because so many local households lack secure, long-term accommodation.
“But those homes must be in the right areas, like Titnore Way, not on green spaces such as Chatsmore Farm that our community rightly values so highly.”
The 14.3-acre site lies north of Titnore Way, between The West Worthing Club to the west and woodland and a lake to the north and east. Previously used by the Caravan and Motorhome Club, the brownfield land is considered suitable for redevelopment.
As well as delivering 46 affordable homes and 84 private properties, the council says the sale will help reduce its borrowing costs — freeing up more money to invest in local services.
