Police in Chichester are urging residents to take extra care over home security this winter, warning that burglaries can have a lasting impact on people’s wellbeing and sense of safety.

Sussex Police say officers are committed to keeping communities safe, but stress they cannot be everywhere at all times. Instead, they are asking residents to stay vigilant and take a few simple precautions that can make a real difference in preventing crime.

Police say one of the most effective steps people can take is to always lock doors and windows when leaving the house, even if it’s only for a short time. They are also advising residents who use key safes to update the access codes regularly, reducing the risk of them being compromised.

Making homes look occupied is another important deterrent. Officers suggest using timer switches on lights and, where possible, installing alarms or CCTV systems. These measures can make properties less attractive to potential burglars, particularly during the darker winter months.

Residents are also being reminded to keep valuables out of sight and to hide car keys, rather than leaving them on display near doors or windows. Police say visible valuables can make homes an easy target for opportunistic thieves.

Sussex Police are asking anyone who sees or hears something suspicious, or notices unusual behaviour in their area, to report it straight away. Information can be passed on online or by calling 101. In an emergency, or if a crime is in progress, people should dial 999 immediately.

Officers say spending just a few minutes securing a property, and making a quick report when something doesn’t feel right, can help protect not only individual homes but also neighbours and the wider community this winter.
