Sussex Police are inviting parents to free online safety sessions this month.

The one-hour course is designed to help parents and guardians keep children safe on the internet, covering social media, gaming, parental controls and more.

It’s run by the force’s Cyber Protect team, with a chance to ask questions at the end.

The internet is central to children’s lives, from schoolwork and socialising to gaming and entertainment. But with those opportunities come risks. Parents can take simple steps to help keep their children safe online.

Start with open conversations. Encourage children to talk about what they do online, who they interact with, and any concerns they may have. Make online safety part of everyday family discussions, just like road safety or stranger danger.

Parental controls are another useful tool. Most devices, apps, and broadband providers offer settings to restrict inappropriate content, limit screen time, or manage downloads. While no filter is perfect, they add an important layer of protection.

Social media and gaming platforms can connect children with friends but may also expose them to strangers. Remind children never to share personal information, such as their address, school, or phone number — and to use privacy settings.

It’s also important for parents to set boundaries: agree screen time limits, keep devices out of bedrooms overnight, and model good online behaviour themselves.

By combining clear communication, practical tools, and ongoing support, parents can give children the confidence to enjoy the digital world safely.
