Sussex Search and Rescue receives Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service

Sussex Search & Rescue, a team of volunteers that support Sussex Police in searching for vulnerable missing people, has been awarded the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service.

This is the highest award that can be given to voluntary groups in the UK.

Sussex Search and Rescue is the primary volunteer resource used by Sussex Police in the search and rescue of vulnerable missing people. The team are on call 24 hours a day, 365 days a year to search anywhere within Sussex, or can assist elsewhere within the UK. All members are volunteers. The team, which was established in 2002, is one of 244 charities, social enterprises and volunteer groups to receive the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service in 2022.

The Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service was created by HM The Queen in 2002 to celebrate the anniversary of her coronation. Winners are announced on 2 June each year to coincide with the anniversary of the Queen’s coronation.

Chief Constable of Sussex Police and Patron of Sussex Search & Rescue, Jo Shiner said:

“The amazing volunteers of Sussex Search & Rescue provide a vital service to Sussex Police, and the local community, in the search for vulnerable missing people. As the very proud patron for the team, I would like to congratulate them on receiving this prestigious award and thank them for their dedication and professionalism. They quite literally save lives with their voluntary efforts”

Chairperson of Sussex Search & Rescue, said:

“We are delighted that in our 20th year of operation, Sussex Search & Rescue has been recognised by the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service. This award, which is known as the MBE for voluntary service, pays tribute to the unwavering dedication of our volunteer members, past and present.”
