Roald Dahl’s much-loved children’s classic The BFG is set to be brought to life on an epic scale at Chichester Festival Theatre this spring, as the venue opens its 2026 Festival season.
The production is a major new international co-production between Chichester Festival Theatre, the Royal Shakespeare Company, Singapore Repertory Theatre, Esplanade – Theatres on the Bay and the Roald Dahl Story Company. It is directed by Daniel Evans, who is Co-Artistic Director of the RSC and a former Artistic Director of Chichester Festival Theatre.
Audiences can expect a visually spectacular production featuring towering giants, oversized snozzcumbers, glowing dream jars and theatrical magic fit for the Queen of Enger-land herself. The show boasts a cast of 24 performers, including ten specialist puppeteers who operate an extraordinary range of puppets, from the 16-foot Bloodbottler to the tiny seven-inch Sophie.
Behind the scenes, more than 60 production staff support the show, alongside seven live musicians and a creative team of over 30 artists and technical specialists. The production combines puppetry, lighting, video, illusions, costume and sound design to create a fully immersive theatrical experience.
Running at the Festival Theatre from the 9th of March until the 11th of April, The BFG tells the story of Sophie, a young orphan taken to Giant Country, where she discovers that not all giants are as fearsome as they seem. With the help of the gentle, dream-catching BFG, she hatches a daring plan to stop human-eating giants and save children around the world.
Following its Chichester run, the production will transfer to Singapore’s Esplanade Theatre.
