Officials say HMS Dragon was made ready for deployment as quickly as possible before leaving Portsmouth.
The Type 45 air defence destroyer, HMS Dragon, sailed from HMNB Portsmouth on Tuesday as it heads out for operations with the Royal Navy.
Families and well-wishers gathered along the harbour walls to watch the warship depart, with many waving goodbye as the vessel made its way through Portsmouth Harbour and out into the Solent.
HMS Dragon is one of the Royal Navy’s advanced Type 45 destroyers, designed primarily to provide air defence for the UK’s carrier strike group and allied naval forces. The warship is equipped with sophisticated radar systems and missile technology capable of detecting and intercepting incoming threats from long distances.
The deployment will see it stationed in the Eastern Mediterranean, working alongside international partners. While full operational details have not been publicly disclosed, the mission is expected to help protect RAF Akrotiri in Cyprus after the base was hit by a drone attack.
Meanwhile, The Royal Navy and Royal Marines Charity say deployments are part of naval life, but when a ship sails it brings a mix of pride and uncertainty for crews and the families supporting them from home.
