Dog walkers are being warned to check local rules before heading to the beach.
Annual summer restrictions come into effect from the 1st of May across many beaches in the South.
Dogs may be banned from some beach areas and required to stay on leads on promenades.
Owners who fail to pick up dog mess could also face a Fixed Penalty Notice.
Councils ban or restrict dogs on many beaches during the summer months, mainly to manage safety, cleanliness and public enjoyment.
Between May and September, beaches are much busier, with families, children, swimmers and tourists using the seafront. Restrictions help reduce the risk of dogs running loose, frightening visitors, disturbing picnics or causing problems near busy promenades.
Cleanliness is another major reason. Even when most owners are responsible, dog mess can pose a health risk and quickly becomes a bigger issue when beaches are crowded. Councils also want to protect bathing water quality and keep popular tourist areas clean.
Some restrictions also help protect wildlife, especially birds nesting or feeding along the coast.
The rules vary from council to council. Some beaches have full seasonal bans, while others only restrict certain areas or require dogs to stay on leads. Owners are usually advised to check local signs before visiting.
