A mysterious UFO sighting has been reported in Wick, near Littlehampton.
The incident occurred on the evening of September 16, when a resident reported seeing a glowing white orb racing across the sky.
According to the witness, the object appeared as a “white ball or orb, pulsating from white to orange,” travelling faster than anything they had ever seen. The sighting lasted around three seconds before the object disappeared from view.
The witness said the sky was clear at the time, ruling out cloud cover or light distortion, and added that the movement and brightness were unlike any aircraft, satellite, or even the International Space Station.
The sighting has been officially reported to the National UFO Reporting Centre, which collects and investigates accounts of unexplained aerial phenomena from across the world.
No official explanation has been given for the incident. Similar reports of strange lights and fast-moving objects have occasionally been made across Sussex, often sparking debate among stargazers and UFO enthusiasts about whether such sightings can be explained or remain a mystery.
The history of the UFO, or now UAP phenomenon
Sightings of unidentified flying objects, or UFOs, have fascinated people for decades. The modern UFO era began in 1947, when American pilot Kenneth Arnold reported seeing nine shiny discs moving at incredible speed near Mount Rainier in Washington. His account led to the term “flying saucer” and sparked a wave of public interest.
In the years that followed, reports of strange objects in the sky surged worldwide, often linked to Cold War tensions and advances in aviation technology. The 1947 incident in Roswell, New Mexico, where debris from a crashed balloon was mistaken for an alien spacecraft, cemented UFOs in popular culture.
During the 1950s and 1960s, governments, including those of the US and the UK, investigated hundreds of sightings. Most were later explained as weather balloons, aircraft, or astronomical phenomena, but a small number remained unexplained.
In recent years, official attitudes have undergone a shift. The US military now refers to sightings as “UAPs” — Unidentified Aerial Phenomena — and has released several declassified videos showing mysterious airborne objects. While there’s still no confirmed evidence of extraterrestrial life, UFOs continue to capture the public imagination.
