Vital lifeline for Widewater Lagoon wildlife to be restored early 2026

The Environment Agency is set to begin essential refurbishment work at the Widewater Lagoon in late January 2026.

The lagoon, which is designated as a Local Wildlife Site, relies on a mitigation pipe that allows seawater to flow in during high tides. This process is vital in maintaining stable water levels and protecting the delicate balance of habitats that support a wide range of birds, plants and aquatic life.

Routine inspections have shown that the seaward section of the pipe, along with its supporting timber frame, has reached the end of its serviceable life and now needs replacing. Without the work, there is a risk that the lagoon could partially dry out, as nearly happened during last summer’s prolonged hot weather.

The refurbishment is scheduled to run from late January through to the end of March 2026. It will be funded through the existing beach management budget for the Shoreham and Lancing frontage, meaning no additional funding is required.

During the works, there may be some temporary restrictions to beach access around the site to ensure the safety of contractors and the public. The Environment Agency says disruption will be kept to a minimum wherever possible.

Once completed, the project will help secure the long-term health of Widewater Lagoon, safeguarding an important natural asset for both wildlife and the local community.

Andy Manville of the Environment Agency said: “Widewater Lagoon is a treasured local wildlife site, home to a rich variety of species that depend on carefully balanced water levels to thrive. This essential work will ensure the lagoon continues to flourish as a haven for wildlife and a much-loved destination for visitors for years to come.
