Wealden councillors have voted to formally oppose government plans to house asylum seekers at the Crowborough Army Camp, following a heated debate over the suitability of the site and the impact on the local community.

The Home Office proposal, first outlined earlier this year, would see around 600 adult men accommodated at the former training base on the outskirts of the town. The site, which has been largely unused in recent years, is one of several being considered nationally as ministers seek to reduce the use of hotels for asylum accommodation.

Councillors raised concerns about the remote location of the camp, pressure on local health services, policing, and the availability of transport links. Some also questioned whether the ageing facilities meet the standards required for long-term habitation. As a result, Wealden District Council passed a motion stating its formal opposition to the plans and calling on the government to rethink the proposal.

Meanwhile, Sussex Weald MP Nus Ghani says there is still time for the community to mount a legal challenge. She says she has been assured by officials that the Crowborough site has not yet been confirmed as safe, legal or compliant for the purpose intended. Ghani has been pressing ministers for more transparency and has argued that any site chosen should meet strict criteria to ensure the welfare of asylum seekers as well as local residents.
