West Sussex County Council is working with partners to help residents enjoy the men’s football World Cup safely and responsibly.
As excitement builds around the tournament, the county council is providing advice and support to both businesses and the public, alongside organisations including Sussex Police.
The aim is to make sure people can enjoy matches in a safe and healthy way, whether watching at home, in pubs, bars, or other public venues.
A spokesperson for the county council said: “The World Cup is a fantastic celebration of sport and community and an opportunity for people to come together. We want everyone to enjoy the matches safely and healthily.
“There are of course risks associated with high profile events like this as crowds of people gather and consumption of alcohol increases. If you see or experience something that makes you feel uncomfortable, we encourage you to report your concerns.”
The message being promoted is: notice it, report it, get support.
Residents can report concerns through the county council’s report problems in your area webpage, including incidents of hate crime or situations that may cause unrest, fear or anxiety in the community.
Crimes can also be reported to Sussex Police online or by calling 101. If someone is at immediate risk, people should always call 999.
The county council is also offering training to licensed premises, helping staff spot early signs of harassment, sexual violence including spiking, domestic abuse and hate-motivated incidents.
The training is designed to help staff safely manage concerning behaviour, support anyone experiencing harm, and know when to escalate concerns.
Alongside this, the county council’s WORTH Services team is supporting Sussex Police with Operation Hope, which involves proactive visits to people considered at highest risk of domestic abuse.
The council says the work supports its priority of keeping people safe.
