The transformation of Bognor Regis's Alexandra Theatre into a new arts centre is gathering pace, with construction progressing towards its planned opening in spring 2027.
Arun District Council has confirmed that significant progress has been made on the Alexandra Arts Centre, with work increasingly shifting from major building operations to the detailed interior fitting-out.
The redevelopment is a key part of the council's wider Regis Rejuvenation programme, which aims to revitalise Bognor Regis town centre and seafront.
According to the council's latest construction update, published on 22 October, the building's exterior is beginning to take on its finished appearance.
Brickwork has been completed up to first-lift level, while installation has started on decorative architectural features that will help give the building its distinctive appearance.
Another major milestone has been reached on the roof, where the installation of mechanical equipment has been completed.
This includes essential components for the venue's heating, ventilation and air-handling systems.
Inside the building, contractors are making progress with painting, decorating and joinery, as the various spaces begin to take their final shape.
Skirting boards and window boards are being fitted throughout the centre, while preparations are underway for the production of specially designed handrails and balustrades.
The coming weeks will see further progress on the specialist equipment needed to turn the building into a fully functioning performance venue.
Work will continue on the installation of theatre lighting and audio-visual systems, alongside electrical and mechanical testing.
Contractors will also be carrying out plastering, ceiling installation, flooring and decorative finishing work.
The council says activity will remain focused on these areas in the run-up to Christmas, while the remaining exterior details are completed.
The Alexandra Arts Centre, previously known as the Alexandra Theatre, is being developed into a cultural venue offering a wider range of entertainment and community activities.
Once open, it is expected to host theatre productions, live music, comedy, film screenings, workshops and community events.
Arun Arts, which will operate the venue, is also preparing its programme of events ahead of the reopening.
The project forms part of wider efforts to strengthen Bognor Regis's cultural offering, attract visitors and support the local economy.
The council says the construction programme remains on schedule, with preparations continuing for the venue to welcome its first audiences in spring 2027.
