Brighton and Hove Albion have been knocked out of the EFL Cup after losing to holders Manchester City in a dramatic penalty shootout.

The Seagulls were hoping to book their place in the quarter-finals but saw their cup hopes come to an end following a closely fought match.

Both sides scored twice during the ninety minutes, with the game finishing two-all and neither team able to find a winning goal before the final whistle.

With the scores level, the match went straight to a penalty shootout to decide which team would progress to the next round.

Manchester City held their nerve from the penalty spot, winning the shootout four-three to secure their place in the last eight of the competition.

The result means City's hopes of retaining the EFL Cup remain alive, while Brighton must now turn their attention to their other competitions.

For the Seagulls, it was a disappointing end to their cup campaign after taking the defending champions all the way to penalties.

Brighton will now look to put the defeat behind them as they return to Premier League action.
