Police in Eastbourne are urging residents to take extra care this Hallowe'en as officers work with local communities and businesses to prevent a rise in anti-social behaviour.
With Hallowe'en falling on Saturday 31 October, Sussex Police say preparations are already underway across the district to help ensure celebrations pass safely and without disruption.
In a message shared on social media, Eastbourne Police said officers were working alongside shops, businesses and local communities to tackle anti-social behaviour, which can often increase around Hallowe'en.
Residents are being encouraged to remain vigilant when answering their doors, particularly if they are not expecting visitors.
For those who would prefer not to receive trick-or-treaters, police recommend displaying a 'No Trick or Treaters' poster in a visible location. These can be printed at home or obtained from local police stations and Police Contact Points.
Officers have also shared practical advice for people who may feel anxious or vulnerable during the celebrations.
Anyone unsure about who is knocking at their door is advised not to open it without checking first. Police recommend using a spyhole, looking through a window or keeping a door chain secured.
People living alone are encouraged to have the telephone number of a trusted neighbour, friend or relative readily available.
Neighbourhood Watch volunteers are also being asked to look out for vulnerable residents and offer reassurance to those who may be spending the evening alone.
Meanwhile, motorists are being reminded to take particular care on Saturday evening, when large numbers of children and families could be out trick-or-treating.
Drivers should reduce their speed through residential streets and remain alert for excited youngsters who may step into the road unexpectedly.
Police say the aim is to allow families to enjoy Hallowe'en while respecting those who do not wish to participate.
Anyone experiencing or witnessing anti-social behaviour is encouraged to report incidents as they happen through the Sussex Police website or by calling 101.
In an emergency, always call 999.
