Portsmouth is preparing to honour the men and women who lost their lives serving their country, with two special remembrance services taking place in the city this November.
Portsmouth City Council is inviting residents, veterans, serving military personnel and families to come together for Remembrance Sunday on 8 November and Armistice Day on Wednesday 11 November.
Both events will take place in Guildhall Square, providing an opportunity for the community to reflect on the sacrifices made by members of the Armed Forces during conflicts throughout history.
Remembrance Sunday – 8 November
The city's main Remembrance Sunday Service and Parade will take place between 10.30am and midday in Guildhall Square.
Proceedings will begin at 10.30am with a parade featuring veterans, serving military personnel and youth organisations.
At 11am, those gathered will observe a two-minute silence to remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice.
A remembrance service will follow, concluding with a wreath-laying ceremony at the First World War Cenotaph and Second World War Memorial.
Members of the public are encouraged to attend and pay their respects.
Armistice Day – 11 November
A separate service will take place on Wednesday 11 November at the Cenotaph in Guildhall Square.
Beginning at 10.45am, the shorter ceremony will include readings and poems reflecting on the sacrifices made during wartime.
At exactly 11am, a two-minute silence will mark the moment the guns fell silent on the Western Front following the Armistice of 11 November 1918.
The tradition continues to provide an opportunity for people across the country to remember those who died in the First World War and subsequent conflicts.
Remembering those who served
As a city with strong naval and military connections, Portsmouth has a long history of commemorating those who served their country.
The annual ceremonies bring together different generations, from veterans and serving personnel to young people and local families.
Residents wishing to attend are encouraged to plan their journeys and allow sufficient time to reach Guildhall Square before the services begin.
Both events are open to the public.
Further information can be found on the Portsmouth City Council website.
