Uber has stopped its operations in Nigeria and Uganda with immediate effect – citing "a thorough review of our business" as its reason for shutting down in the former.
After 12 years in Nigeria, Africa's most populous country, the company told customers on Wednesday that it was winding down its business, without disclosing further details on the reason.
Uber said in a message to users: "After a thorough review of our business, we have made the tough decision to wind down our operations in Nigeria, effective 2 September 2026."
Competition in Nigeria's ride-hailing market has intensified in recent years, amid challenges for drivers and platforms including rising fuel costs, a volatile currency and inflation.
The company launched its Lagos operation in 2014, before expanding to other cities in the country.
It did not say how many drivers or users will be affected by the closure, or whether any assets will be sold.
An Uber spokesperson then said in an email on Thursday that operations in Uganda had also stopped.
Users trying to book rides on the app in Uganda received a message saying there were none available.
