A 12-year-old boy has died after a car he was travelling in collided with a train in Co Mayo, Ireland.

The collision occurred at a level crossing at Kiltybo, near Ballyhaunis, shortly after 8.45pm on Thursday.

The boy was pronounced dead at the scene.

A man in his 40s, the driver of the car, was taken to hospital for treatment. His injuries are described as not life-threatening.

No one on the train was hurt, and the road remained closed on Friday morning.

Irish Rail said in a statement on Thursday that its "thoughts are with everyone affected by today's incidents".

The rail operator added at around 8am on Friday that replacement buses will operate from Westport to Athlone.

Ireland's police service, An Garda Siochan, is appealing for witnesses to the incident to come forward.

It added that the boy's remains were removed to Mayo University Hospital for a post-mortem examination.

The collision was the second on the Westport to Dublin line on Thursday.

Bus transfers were arranged for passengers when a train struck a tractor at a level crossing at Meelaghans at around 3.50pm.

A man in his 40s was taken to Midland Regional Hospital Tullamore after that incident. His injuries were not thought to be life-threatening.
