Woman seriously injured in suspected stabbing at church in County Waterford, Ireland

A woman in her 50s has been seriously injured in a suspected stabbing at a church in Ireland.

The victim was attacked shortly before morning mass on Tuesday at Holy Cross Church in Tramore, County Waterford.

She was taken to Waterford University Hospital with injuries described as serious but not threatening.

Gardai (police) said they had arrested a man in his 30s at a nearby residence and seized a knife. He is being held at a police station in Co. Waterford.

The Diocese of Waterford & Lismore said it was "deeply shocked" and was praying for the woman's recovery.

"We wish to commend the courage and presence of mind shown by the parishioners who assisted during this frightening incident," its statement said.

"We also thank the priests of the parish for their immediate pastoral care and concern, and we express our sincere gratitude to An Garda Siochana, the National Ambulance Service and all emergency personnel for their prompt response."

Anyone in the Summerhill area of Tramore between 9.15am and 10.15am is asked to contact police.
