Plans to build 40 homes in Turners Hill have been approved by Mid Sussex District Council.
The application for land at Old Vicarage Field and the Old Estate Yard, in Church Road, was given the nod by the planning committee at the end of last week.
While the application was approved, councillors and members of the public had plenty to say about safety at the four-way junction yards from the site.
The junction, where East Street and Church Road cross North Street and Selsfield Road is infamous with motorists.
One speaker said: “Everyone who lives in or passes through Turners Hill knows it’s a nightmare.”
It was a view shared by chairman Gary Marsh (Con, Ardingly, Balcombe & Turners Hill), who said: “We got the homes but no improvements at the junction.”
Dick Sweatman (Con, East Grinstead Herontye) described the junction as ‘extremely dangerous’ and ‘absolutely horrendous’, adding that it was ‘shameful’ that nothing had been done to improve things.
But the West Sussex highways team raised no objections to the application, meaning that a refusal for road safety reasons would likely be overturned at appeal, costing the council thousands of pounds.
The highways team did ask for the applicant to contribute just over £10,000 to be spent on a Traffic Regulation Order for double yellow lines and ‘keep clear’ markings at the site’s access on Church Road.
