Local artists are showcasing their work across a series of independent cafes on the South Downs and along the south coast, in a project designed to support Sage House by Dementia Support in Tangmere.
The initiative has been organised by Jackie Matthews, who retired in 2023 and joined Chichester Art Society following a period of personal bereavement. Inspired by the talent she discovered locally, she set out to create a more accessible way for artists to exhibit their work, while also supporting a local cause.
The exhibition is spread across venues including The Vale in West Stoke, Lordington Park, The Huts at Thornham Marina and The Deck at Emsworth Yacht Harbour. Together, they form an informal art trail aimed at encouraging visitors to explore multiple locations.
Unlike traditional exhibitions, the event removes the need for a dedicated gallery space or long commitments from artists. Instead, it offers a low-cost, flexible way to display artwork, while also helping to boost footfall for the participating independent cafes.
Visitors are encouraged to travel between the venues, with a chocolate treat offered to those who complete the full trail.
The artworks on display follow four themes – seascapes, landscapes, and food and drink – reflecting both the surroundings of the venues and the creative focus of the artists involved.
Organisers hope the project will not only highlight the strength of the local art community, but also raise awareness and support for Sage House and the work it does for people living with dementia and their families.
