One of Chichester’s longest-standing cultural institutions is marking a major milestone as it enters its fiftieth anniversary year.
Oxmarket Gallery has launched a £50,000 for 50 Years fundraising campaign, aimed at securing the gallery’s long-term future as a free-to-access cultural space while expanding its work with artists, schools and the wider community.
Founded in 1976, Oxmarket was Chichester’s first art gallery and has played a central role in the city’s cultural life for five decades. The gallery is housed in a medieval deconsecrated church just off East Street and offers a rolling programme of free exhibitions, changing every fortnight, ensuring art remains accessible to residents and visitors alike.
The anniversary fundraising campaign comes at a pivotal time for the charity, as it looks to strengthen its financial sustainability while continuing to support local, national and emerging artists. Organisers say the £50,000 target will help safeguard Oxmarket’s future and allow it to develop its educational outreach, including work with schools and community groups across the district.
As part of its anniversary year, Oxmarket has also joined the Chichester Chamber of Commerce, reflecting a renewed focus on building partnerships with local businesses. The move is intended to raise awareness of the gallery’s charitable work and encourage greater involvement from the business community in its long-term plans.
Run with the support of a strong volunteer network, Oxmarket demonstrates how a small, place-based charity can deliver significant cultural impact while remaining inclusive and community-focused. The gallery says its fiftieth anniversary celebrations will highlight both its history and its ambitions for the future, ensuring it continues to thrive as a vital part of Chichester’s cultural landscape for decades to come.
