Bognor Regis residents invited to choose 29 priorities ahead of royal centenary

Residents are being asked to help select 29 practical improvements for Bognor Regis ahead of the town’s royal centenary in 2029.

Bognor Regis and Littlehampton MP Alison Griffiths has launched the 29 for ’29 campaign, inviting people to submit ideas for projects she could champion over the next three years.

Suggestions will be collected throughout the summer before eligible proposals are put to a public vote to determine the final list of 29 local priorities.

The campaign follows national newspaper coverage of a Which? survey which once again placed Bognor Regis at the bottom of its ranking of British seaside towns.

The town will mark 100 years since it was granted the royal suffix “Regis” on 26 July 2029.

King George V awarded the title following a period of convalescence in the area.

The campaign will focus on small and achievable projects which residents believe could improve the appearance, accessibility and experience of the town.

Suggestions could include additional bins and seating, improved lighting, new signage, planting, safer crossings, repaired street furniture, cleaner public spaces, play equipment and improvements to the seafront and town centre.

Alison Griffiths MP said:

“I love Bognor Regis, and I do not believe the recent headlines capture the town that residents, businesses, and regular visitors know. There is a great deal here that deserves to be celebrated. There are also places where practical improvements are needed, and we should be confident enough to say so.

“29 for ’29 will put local people in charge of identifying the priorities I should champion as we approach the centenary. I want residents to tell me about the missing bench, the poorly lit street, the damaged sign, the inaccessible public space, or the simple idea that has been overlooked. These are the changes that can make a real difference to how a town looks and feels.

“The final 29 will become the basis of my work with the Bognor Regis Town Centre Action Group, councils, businesses, community organisations, and other partners over the next three years. I will identify who needs to act, press for commitments, explore funding, and use my position to keep each ambition firmly on the agenda.

“I cannot promise that every item will be delivered in full by July 2029, because many of the decisions and resources will rest with other organisations. What I can promise is that the priorities chosen by residents will guide where I focus my activity for Bognor Regis ahead of the centenary, and that I will report openly on the progress we make.”

Ms Griffiths helped establish the Bognor Regis Town Centre Action Group following a meeting involving local businesses, councils, Sussex Police and community partners in May 2025.

The group works with local government, businesses and community organisations to improve safety, the appearance of the town centre and the experience of people who live, work and visit Bognor Regis.

Nominations for the 29 for ’29 campaign will close on 31 August 2026.

Duplicate submissions will then be grouped together and proposals checked against the campaign’s criteria before eligible projects are put to a public vote during September.

The final 29 ambitions are due to be announced on Ms Griffiths’s website on 1 October 2026.

They will then be presented to the Town Centre Action Group and relevant councils, agencies, businesses, landowners and community organisations.
