The family of a Sussex couple jailed in Iran say they are increasingly concerned for their safety following recent US and Israeli military strikes on the country.
Lindsay and Craig Foreman, from East Sussex, were arrested in January last year while travelling through Iran as part of a round-the-world motorcycle trip. Iranian authorities accused the couple of spying, charges which they strongly denied. Despite maintaining their innocence, the pair were later sentenced to ten years in prison and are currently being held in Evin Prison, a high-security facility in the capital, Tehran. The prison is widely known for holding political detainees and foreign nationals. Their family says it has become even more worried in recent days after reports of explosions being heard close to the prison, amid heightened tensions following military action involving the United States and Israel against Iran. Relatives say communication with the couple remains extremely limited and that the rapidly changing security situation has added to fears for their wellbeing. The Foremans were well into their international journey when they were detained, having documented their travels online and described the trip as a long-planned adventure. Their arrest and subsequent conviction have prompted ongoing diplomatic efforts by the UK government, which continues to press Iranian authorities for consular access and assurances over their treatment. The Foreign Office advises against all travel to Iran and has previously warned that British nationals may be at risk of arbitrary detention. The family of Lindsay and Craig Foreman says it is urging officials to do everything possible to secure their safety as tensions in the region continue to escalate.
