A pilot has had a lucky escape after having to ditch his light aircraft in the water off Lee-on-the-Solent.
According to HM Coastguard, the incident happened at around 16:15 today (28 February 2026)
Hill Head Coastguard Rescue Team, Hamble Lifeboat, a coastguard helicopter, an air ambulance, South Central Ambulance Service, Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service, and Hampshire Police were all sent to the scene.
The pilot, who was the only person on board, was able to get out of the plane himself and reach the beach into the care of the ambulance service.
Hampshire Police have released the following statement: “We were called at 4.15pm today (Saturday 28 February) to a report of a light aircraft in the sea, close to the shoreline by Lee-on-Solent Sailing Club, Marine Parade East.
“We attended the scene, along with our emergency service partners.
“Thankfully, the pilot, a man in his 50s from West Sussex and the only occupant of the aircraft, reported only minor injuries.
“Officers remain at the scene at this time.”
Mike Hill captured the moment of the plane washing up on the beach upside down.
