An investigation is underway after two police officers were assaulted in Middleton-on-Sea.
Sussex Police say they were called to reports of a driver apparently asleep in a vehicle at around six pm yesterday on Lane End Road.
A man was arrested at the scene on suspicion of assault and driving while unfit through drink or drugs, before being further arrested in custody on suspicion of causing GBH.
One officer was taken to hospital with a head injury.
Witnesses described a heavy police presence in the area last night.
Police are appealing for witnesses.
Sussex Police have released the following statement:
We were called to a report of a vehicle in the middle of the road where the driver appeared to be asleep at the wheel on Sunday (1 March) at 6pm.
Officers attended the scene and found the vehicle had been driven further along the road in Lane End Road, Middleton-on-Sea.
Two police officers were assaulted by a man from the car. He was arrested on suspicion of assault and driving while unfit through drink or drugs and taken to custody where he was further arrested on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm.
One of the officers sustained a head injury and has been taken to hospital for medical checks and treatment.
Enquiries are ongoing and anyone who witnessed the incident is asked to report online or phone 101 quoting serial 933 of 01/03.
