A new campaign has been launched to encourage more LGBTQ+ people in West Sussex, East Sussex and Brighton and Hove to consider becoming foster carers.
Local authorities say they want carers who reflect the diversity of the communities they serve and can provide supportive and stable homes for children in care. With the number of children needing placements continuing to rise, councils are urging people from all walks of life to come forward.
A series of information events will take place over the coming months, offering advice about the fostering process and answering questions from anyone considering applying.
Officials say fostering can be a rewarding role, with carers receiving weekly payments, additional allowances and tax benefits. Local authorities also provide ongoing professional and peer support, along with comprehensive training and development.
There's no formal qualifications required to become a foster carer, as full training is given before approval. Peace of mind is also promised when fostering through a not-for-profit local authority, as all resources are directed towards supporting children, young people and carers.
Those interested are asked to consider whether they have a spare bedroom, some previous childcare experience – whether through family life, work or volunteering – and the time and energy to put a child’s needs first.
The campaign specifically highlights the need for more LGBTQ+ carers, emphasising the vital role they can play in helping children and young people thrive. By widening the pool of carers, councils hope to ensure children are matched with families who can best meet their needs.
